Help and Frequently Asked Questions...
- What is a Top-Level-Domain (TLD)?
TLD stands for Top Level Domain. This includes any domain names with the suffix: .com, .net, .org. Therefore, international domain names are not TLD's.
- What does it cost to put my site on the internet?
Nowadays, very little! With a nominal setup and hosting fee, you can have a domain name AND a hosting account for HALF of what it used to cost to register your domain name
for two years (it was $70 to register a name through Network Solutions for two years prior to ICANN allowing other registrars to register names). Simply buy your domain name
plus at least one month's hosting is all it takes to get started! As far as maintenance, we cater to small businesses so our fees are kept very LOW so even if you
need design, you're not looking at spending tens of thousands of dollars if you choose situ8.
- What is a URL?
URL stands for uniform resource locator and that makes perfect sense if you think in internet terms. You are wanting to locate a resource and we need a uniform way to do it! When your site is put on the
Internet, it's assigned an IP# such as 69.57.142.69. Rather than saying, "Visit my website at 69.57.142.69", you simply say "Visit me at www.situ8.com" which is much easier to remember!
- Do you host adult sites, warez sites or sites containing illegal material?
Warez sites, adult sites, and illegal material will never be accepted on our servers.
- Can I send SPAM (unsolicited e-mail)? What is your policy on this?
Spamming, or the sending of unsolicited email from our servers or using an email address that is related to our company or hosted on any of our servers is STRICTLY prohibited. We consider the sending
of spam one of the highest ranked grounds for the immediate termination of the violator of this rule. Failure to abide by this policy by anyone using your mail server will result in termination of
your account without eligibility for a refund.
- Do I need to www in front of my domain name to access my site?
No. You can access your website with or without the www in front of your domain name.
- Can I have multiple domains point to the same website?
Yes. This service is commonly referred to as "Domain Pointer" and allows you to have as many domain names as you wish point to the same website on your account. This should not be confused with
having different domains point to different websites all on the same account.
- Is it possible to upgrade my hosting plan?
Yes, and you can even do this for free! All upgrades are processed within 5 - 24 hours.
- Does situ8 handle domain registration?
Yes. We are currently expanding our list of available domain extensions and will soon be including some foreign names.
- What is a virtual Domain?
A virtual domain is the base URL of the domain name. Examples include yourdomain.com and situ8.net. Virtual domain names are not just limited to .com, .net, .org, or .edu domain
extensions. International domain names are also virtual domain names, such as london.co.uk, deutchland.de, etc.
- Can I transfer an existing domain name to situ8?
Yes. situ8 welcomes virtual domain clients whether they are registering a new domain or transferring an existing domain from elsewhere. There is never a reason why you could not move your domain to obtain
situ8's services, unless you do not own the domain. As long as you own your domain, you can transfer it to situ8. We currently only handle .com, .net, .info, .biz, .us, and .org domain names. Transfers will incur a
transfer fee but will extend your domain registration for a minimum of one year.
- Who must approve the transfer of my domain name in order to move my domain to situ8?
On your domain name record, there is listed an Administrative and Technical Contact. Both of these contacts may be the same person, but one of them should be yourself if you own the domain name. It is the
Administrative and Technical Contacts who will be notified via e-mail.
- How long does it take to transfer my existing domain name to situ8?
This pretty much depends entirely on the Administrative and Technical Contacts, and specifically, how fast they reply to the e-mail sent from situ8, approving the transfer of the domain name in question.
This is the only step in transferring a domain name that can cause a hold up. If the Administrative or Technical Contact sends the authorization back immediately, your domain name could be transferred within 2 to 4 days.
- How much do domain name pointers cost?
Zero, Zilch. You can have an unlimited amount of domain pointers added to your account.
- What Operating System does situ8 use for its UNIX webservers?
We are running RedHat Linux Enterprise on all UNIX web servers.
- Does situ8 have Windows-based webservers?
No. We do not currently provide Windows webservers.
- What webserver software does situ8 use for UNIX web hosting?
situ8 uses Apache Webserver on all UNIX servers. However, we do make some modifications to the original source code so that we can offer specific features and services.
- How long does it take for DNS settings to change over?
DNS changes can take anywhere from 24 - 72 hours to finish updating.
- Do you allow clients to advertise for money on their website?
Yes. Advertising is compliant with our Acceptable Use Policy.
- Do you offer custom hosting plans?
Yes. Please contact us with your requirements.
- Does e-mail on the server count towards my allotted space?
Yes. Any e-mail you have stored on the server counts as storage for your account. This is one reason we recommend not storing e-mail on the server. Once you download and read your mail, you should ensure that your e-mail client deletes
the mail from the server. In the configuration settings for your e-mail client, make sure that you do not have the option selected to "Leave mail on server" if you do not wish to store e-mail on the server.
- What is an e-mail auto responder?
An e-mail auto responder is a special type of e-mail account that simply responds to all incoming e-mail with a predetermined message.
- What is mail bombing and how does it effect my e-mail service?
E-mail bombers are malicious programs that intentionally deliver a large number of e-mail messages to your mailbox with the intention of flooding a person's mailbox. Most e-mail bombers are capable of sending out 2-5 e-mail messages
per second, delivering many thousands of unwanted e-mail messages to the recipients' mailbox. This would take quite some time to download, and the POP3 server would most likely timeout before completing such a task. To combat these
activities, we have setup a mail bomb detector on our SMTP server. This program will automatically detect when any user appears to be the victim of a mail bomb. The program defines a mail bomb as occurring when any
client receives 50 e-mail messages from the same sender within a one-hour time frame. Even though the messages may be different, it does not matter. If this occurs, please notify us immediately. We will take action to block the sender
from continuing with the attack.
- What is an e-mail forwarder?
An e-mail forwarder is a special type of e-mail account which simply forwards all e-mail sent to a particular e-mail address @yourdomain.com to a specific POP3 e-mail account.
